There is this really grotesque collectively-held conviction that sex workers are terrible mothers by default.
It is so distressingly prevalent, to the point that no one blinks twice at the vile media representation of serial killers and other murderous psychos having had a sex working mother. People are literally just like “yep, makes total sense. You can understand why this child would grow up to be a murderer and rapist, with a mother like that” (“that” qualifying as nothing more than being a sex worker, no information on her actual parenting is ever required or enquired about).
I can’t even describe how deeply this erodes my spirit. I can’t imagine what it’s like for a sex worker who has children.
I’ve met multiple women who were investigated by child protective service for being sex workers (FS SWs cos that’s my area) or had their kids removed entirely. Personally I told my social worker I used to be a sex worker and she said she would’ve reported me had I said current because “prostitution indicates other problems in the home such as drug abuse and child neglect”. I know women who lost everything they worked for their entire lives cos they were divorcing and their bum exes threatened to out them and take their kids. It’s a living nightmare tbh.
Important to know if you’re a sex worker and a mom! I also know a woman who went through a custody battle over her kid and the court considered her ex’s statement that “she’s a stripper” to be a legitimate mark against her character.
My coworker lost custody of her son because the dad kidnapped him and then threatened to out her as a sex worker in any and all court meetings and use that as proof that she’s a bad mother.
